The check engine light can turn on in one of two ways, it can either turn on and stay on, or it can blink. If your check engine light is blinking, you should pull over as soon as it’s safe and call for a tow. When the light comes on and stays on, it means that a sensor in your combustion system has had an abnormal reading, which may or may not be indicative of a problem with your engine. That is important to check, but not as urgent as a flashing light, which indicates imminent engine damage.
